Da Nang holidays

Dragon Bridge lit gold over the Han River at sunset with the Da Nang skyline

Da Nang stretches along Vietnam's central coast, between the long golden arc of My Khe Beach and the Han River that runs through its heart. Cleaner and more spacious than the big two cities, it has grown quickly into a relaxed seaside base. Bridges define its skyline, above all the Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire on weekend nights. The Marble Mountains rise just south, and the ancient town of Hoi An sits a short drive away. It is central Vietnam's natural gateway.

Da Nang is a quieter alternative. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Da Nang trips.

Why visit Da Nang

Da Nang works best as a place to slow down while keeping central Vietnam's highlights within reach. The city beach, My Khe, runs for kilometres with soft sand and warm water, backed by a modern promenade. The Marble Mountains, a cluster of limestone and marble peaks, hide caves, shrines and Buddhist sanctuaries reached by carved steps. Inland and high above the coast, Ba Na Hills is home to the much-photographed Golden Bridge, held aloft by two giant stone hands. On the Son Tra Peninsula, the Lady Buddha statue looks out to sea. Hoi An, Hue and the Hai Van Pass all lie within easy reach.

Areas to know

Food & drink

Central Vietnamese cooking is bolder and spicier than elsewhere, and Da Nang shares much of its repertoire with nearby Hoi An and Hue. The local signature is mi Quang, turmeric-tinted noodles served with just a little broth, herbs, peanuts and prawns or pork. Fresh seafood is everywhere, simply grilled or steamed and eaten by the shore. Rice-paper rolls of pork and herbs, and the fiery beef noodle soup bun bo Hue from the old imperial city up the coast, are local staples too.

What Da Nang feels like

After the intensity of Hanoi and Saigon, Da Nang feels open and unhurried. Wide boulevards, a clean riverfront and a long beachside promenade give the city room to breathe, and the sea breeze keeps it fresher than the deltas. Life splits between the beach, where locals swim early and late to avoid the midday sun, and the riverbanks, which come alive after dark when the bridges light up. At weekends, crowds gather to watch the Dragon Bridge spout fire and water. The mood is easy-going and increasingly cosmopolitan, with cafes and seafood restaurants lining the shore, yet it keeps a distinctly provincial calm.

Getting around

Da Nang is more spread out than it first appears, but flat and easy to navigate. Grab cars and motorbike taxis are the simplest way to get around, and many visitors hire a bicycle or scooter to explore the beach road. The airport sits right in the city, so nothing is very far. For trips to Hoi An, the Marble Mountains or the Hai Van Pass, private cars and organised tours are widely available. Da Nang International Airport is unusual in sitting right inside the city, only a few kilometres from both the river and the beach. That makes arrivals quick and easy, with most hotels a ten to fifteen minute drive away. It is a growing hub for central Vietnam, with domestic links and a rising number of international flights across Asia.

Frequently asked questions

Is Da Nang good for a weekend trip?

Yes, Da Nang works for a weekend as well as a longer stay.

What kind of trip is Da Nang best for?

Da Nang is best for city trips.

Which destinations pair well with Da Nang?

Within multi-city range: Ho Chi Minh (605 km), Hanoi (628 km), Bangkok (842 km).

Is Da Nang worth visiting, or should I just go to Hoi An?

Many people do both, as they are only around thirty to forty minutes apart by road. Da Nang offers a long city beach, river bridges and mountains, while Hoi An offers a preserved ancient trading town. Basing yourself in one and day-tripping to the other is common.

When is the best time to visit Da Nang?

The driest, sunniest months run roughly from February to August, which is peak beach season. The later part of the year, especially October and November, is wetter and can bring storms to the central coast, so the sea is less reliable for swimming.

How do I get to Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge?

Ba Na Hills sits in the mountains west of the city, reached by a long cable car ride from the base station. Most visitors go on an organised day trip or by private car, allowing most of a day to include the gardens, the Golden Bridge and the French-style village at the top.

What is Da Nang like for families?

It suits families well. The beach is broad and generally calm in season, the city is clean and easy to move around, and attractions such as the Marble Mountains, the bridges and Ba Na Hills appeal to a range of ages. Distances are short and the airport is close.
