Limestone islands in Phang Nga Bay near Phuket

Three bays unfurl in sequence below the Karon Viewpoint (Kata Noi, Kata and Karon) each a crescent of pale sand pinned between jungle headlands and the green Andaman Sea. Thailand's largest island is big enough to hold party strips, Sino-Portuguese shophouse streets and near-empty northern beaches without them ever meeting.

Phuket is made for unwinding. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Phuket trips.

Why visit Phuket

Phuket packs an archipelago's worth of scenery into one drivable island. Beach lovers graduate from lively Patong to the long sands of Karon and Kata, then on to quieter Nai Harn and Bang Tao. Old Phuket Town's candy-coloured shophouses and Peranakan cafés reward a day off the sand, while the Big Buddha watches over the south from its hilltop. Offshore, long-tail boats and speedboats reach Phang Nga Bay's limestone towers, the Phi Phi islands and the Similans, some of the finest boat-trip country anywhere.

What Phuket feels like

Two islands share one coastline. The west-coast resorts hum with beach clubs, tailor shops and night markets; inland and to the north, rubber plantations, temples and sleepy fishing villages carry on regardless. Old Town moves at espresso pace, all batik shirts and heritage architecture. The rhythm is seasonal: glassy seas and busy sands from November to April, moody skies and empty beaches in the green season.

Around the island

Southern Thai flavours

Phuket's kitchen is southern Thai with Hokkien Chinese roots. The island earned UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status before most visitors noticed. Seek out mee hokkien noodles, moo hong (peppery braised pork belly) and fierce southern curries such as gaeng som. O-tao, an oyster omelette with taro, is pure Old Town. Roadside roti stands and morning dim sum round out the habit.

Getting about the island

There is no rail and no transit card; the island runs on wheels. Songthaews (the blue open-sided local buses) trundle between Phuket Town and the main beaches by day, while ride-hailing apps and metered or negotiated taxis fill the gaps. Many visitors hire cars or scooters, though the traffic and hills demand genuine riding experience. A smart-bus line links the airport with the west-coast beaches. Phuket International Airport sits at the island's northern end; the airport smart bus runs down the west coast towards Patong, Karon and Rawai, and a taxi to the main southern beaches takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
