Dubai holidays

Dubai skyline lit up at night

Wooden abras still criss-cross Dubai Creek as they have for over a century, ferrying passengers between the spice and gold souks. A few kilometres inland, the Burj Khalifa needles nearly a kilometre into the haze. That span (dhow wharf to supertall) is the whole city in miniature, and a driverless metro links the two.

Dubai is made for unwinding. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Dubai trips.

Why visit Dubai

Dubai compresses extremes into a single afternoon. You can haggle for saffron in Deira in the morning, watch fountains erupt beneath the world's tallest tower at dusk, and finish with your feet in the Gulf. The Creek quarters reward slow wandering, with wind-tower courtyards and pearling-history museums, while Downtown and the Marina supply the skyline spectacle. Add reliable beach weather from autumn to spring, food from every corner of South Asia and the Levant, and an airport half the world can reach nonstop, and the case makes itself.

Landmarks worth your time

What Dubai feels like

Outside, heat and glare; inside, arctic air-conditioning. Dubai life moves between the two. The city speaks Malayalam, Tagalog, Urdu, Arabic and English in the space of one taxi rank. Souk alleys smell of cardamom and oud, mall atriums of perfume counters, and five times a day the call to prayer threads through it all. Evenings are when the city truly wakes, from fountain crowds to beach barbecues.

How the city fits together

Eating across Dubai

Dubai eats the way it speaks: in many languages at once. Emirati cooking (slow rice dishes, date syrup, saffron) shares the table with Kerala thalis, Lebanese grills and Pakistani karak counters. The old quarters around the Creek serve some of the best food in the city from unassuming rooms, while Downtown and Jumeirah handle the polished end of the spectrum.

Moving around the city

The driverless Dubai Metro runs on two main lines (Red along Sheikh Zayed Road, Green looping through Deira and Bur Dubai) and everything is paid with the rechargeable Nol card, which also covers trams, buses and abras. Taxis are metered and plentiful. Distances deceive: districts that look adjacent on a map can be a long, hot walk apart, so plan around stations. Dubai International (DXB) sits within the city, and both metro lines serve its terminals, reaching Downtown in roughly twenty minutes. Al Maktoum International (DWC) lies far to the south-west and is most easily reached by taxi.
