Sapporo holidays

Sapporo TV Tower over the fountains of Odori Park

Sapporo's addresses read like map references: North 3 West 4, a legacy of the grid the Meiji government drew across Hokkaido's plains in the 1870s with American advisers at the drafting table. Winter buries that grid under metres of snowfall, and the city simply moves underground into kilometres of heated walkways.

Sapporo is a quieter alternative. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Sapporo trips.

Why visit Sapporo

Sapporo is Japan with the volume set differently: wide boulevards, big skies and a frontier history barely 150 years old. February's Snow Festival fills Odori Park with colossal snow sculptures; the Sapporo Beer Museum tells the story of one of Japan's oldest beers in its original red-brick brewery; and the narrow Ramen Yokocho alley serves the miso ramen the city invented. Ski slopes, onsen towns and the canal town of Otaru all lie within easy reach, making the city Hokkaido's natural base in every season.

Sapporo's key areas

What Hokkaido feeds you

Hokkaido's larder is the envy of Japan, and Sapporo is where it lands. Miso ramen was invented here (thick, buttery, sometimes crowned with sweetcorn) and soup curry, a spiced broth with bone-in chicken and vegetables, is the city's other homegrown classic. Jingisukan, lamb grilled at the table on a domed iron pan, pairs naturally with the local beer, while Nijo Market's kaisendon bowls pile crab, scallop and salmon roe onto rice.

What Sapporo feels like

Seasons run the show here. In February the city crunches underfoot and Odori Park becomes a gallery of floodlit snow; in summer the same park hosts open-air beer gardens beneath a sky that feels bigger than Honshu's. Locals are unhurried and direct in the Hokkaido way, the Susukino district glows with stacked neon after dark, and the underground Chikaho walkway carries the city quietly through winter while the streets above stand silent.

Subway, streetcar and snow tactics

Three subway lines (Namboku, Tozai and Toho) cross at Odori station and cover most sights. The local SAPICA IC card works on the subway, the streetcar and city buses, and the national IC cards, including JR Hokkaido's Kitaca and Suica, are accepted too. A single streetcar line loops the southwest of the centre, and in winter the Chikaho underground walkway lets you cross the core without touching snow. New Chitose Airport lies well south of the city; JR's Rapid Airport train reaches Sapporo Station in around forty minutes.
