Kochi holidays

Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against an orange sunset at Fort Kochi

Kochi has faced the sea for as long as ships have sought pepper, and the traders who came for it left the city layered with their languages, faiths and architecture. Set where Kerala's backwaters open into the Arabian Sea, it divides between the old Portuguese and Dutch peninsula of Fort Kochi, the spice warehouses of Mattancherry, and the busy mainland of Ernakulam. Ferries stitch the islands together, and the light off the water is soft and green.

Kochi is well suited to city trips. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Kochi trips.

Why visit Kochi

Kochi is where India's long conversation with the wider world is most visible. Vasco da Gama was first buried in St Francis Church, the oldest European church in the country; a synagogue has stood in Jew Town since the sixteenth century; and Kerala murals cover the walls of the Mattancherry Palace. Along the Fort Kochi shore, cantilevered Chinese fishing nets still dip into the harbour at dusk. The city is also the gateway to Kerala's backwaters, an inland maze of lagoons and canals, and hosts the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India's foremost contemporary art exhibition. Evenings bring the drums and painted faces of Kathakali.

Areas to know

Food & drink

Kerala cooks with coconut in every form, curry leaves, and the spices that made the coast famous. Breakfast might be lacy appam with a mild stew, or steamed puttu with black chickpeas. Seafood is central: pearl spot fish wrapped in banana leaf, prawns in coconut, and fish curries soured with kokum. Unusually for India, beef features here, a legacy of the Syrian Christian community, while toddy shops serve fiery dishes alongside palm liquor. Meals often end with a banana.

What Kochi feels like

Fort Kochi moves at a village pace that feels a world away from mainland Ernakulam across the water. Its lanes are lined with weathered merchant houses, art cafes, church spires and the occasional goat, and much of the pleasure lies simply in walking them. Kerala's easy religious plurality is everywhere: churches, temples, mosques and a synagogue within a short stroll of one another. The pace picks up in Ernakulam, a working port city of traffic and shopfronts. Throughout, the backwaters set the mood, and the humid air carries coconut, brine and the smell of drying spice.

Getting around

Kochi is best explored by boat. Government ferries and the newer electric Water Metro connect Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and the islands, a scenic alternative to the congested road bridges. Within Fort Kochi, everything is walkable or a short cycle. Autorickshaws and app cabs cover the mainland, and the Kochi Metro runs across Ernakulam. Backwater cruises depart from the city and from Alappuzha further south. Cochin International Airport lies at Nedumbassery, around 30 kilometres north-east of Ernakulam and further still from Fort Kochi. Prepaid taxis and app cabs make the run; it is worth allowing extra time in heavy traffic.
