Milan holidays

Milan's Duomo cathedral glowing at dusk

Climb to the Duomo's marble roof and Milan lays itself out: a forest of Gothic spires in the foreground, the glass towers of Porta Nuova beyond, and on clear winter days the Alps closing the horizon. At street level the city trades in fashion, design and finance, then downs tools at seven for aperitivo.

Milan is a favourite for couples. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Milan trips.

Why visit Milan

Milan repays the attention day-trippers rarely give it. Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper survives on a refectory wall at Santa Maria delle Grazie; the Pinacoteca di Brera holds one of Italy's great painting collections; La Scala still sets the standard for opera. Around them runs a working city of design studios, tram lines and food traditions (saffron risotto, breaded cotoletta, the evening aperitivo) that feel lived-in rather than performed. With Como, Bergamo and the lakes under an hour away by train, it makes a strong base as well as a destination.

Milan's essential sights

Quarters to wander

Food, the Milanese way

Milanese cooking is rich, northern and rice-based: risotto alla milanese stained gold with saffron, ossobuco braised until the marrow loosens, cotoletta pounded thin and fried in butter. Panettone was born here and remains a serious December business. Just as important is the aperitivo ritual (a spritz or a Milano-Torino with snacks between six and eight) which functions as the city's true social hour.

What Milan feels like

Milan is brisk by Italian standards: suits and bicycles at nine, espresso taken standing at the bar. The mood softens by quarter: Brera's cobbled lanes feel like a small town, the Navigli slow into canal-side idling by evening, and the Quadrilatero della Moda is all polished stone and window-shopping. April's design week and the fashion calendar periodically fill the city; August empties it, when the Milanese decamp to the lakes and the coast.

Riding the trams and the metro

ATM runs five metro lines (M1 to M5) plus an extensive tram network, including wooden 1928-series cars still in daily service. One ticket covers metro, tram and bus within the city zone, and contactless bank cards tap straight through the metro gates. The historic centre is compact enough to cross on foot; trams fill the gaps handsomely, and the M4 line now threads east to west beneath the city. Milan is served by three airports: Malpensa for long-haul, linked by the Malpensa Express train; Linate, the closest, now on metro line M4; and Bergamo Orio al Serio, about an hour away.
