White-sand beach with palms and driftwood on Zanzibar

Cloves, cardamom and vanilla still scent the carved-door alleyways of Stone Town, just as they did when dhows ruled this coast. Beyond the old town the island unrolls into powder-white beaches where the tide retreats for a kilometre, stranding fishing boats on glittering sand flats.

Zanzibar is a quieter alternative. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Zanzibar trips.

Why visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar layers centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European trade into one compact archipelago. A single day can take in the old slave market memorial and the winding bazaars of Stone Town, a spice farm where you crush fresh nutmeg between your fingers, and a dhow crossing a molten sunset. Add the coral gardens off Mnemba, endemic red colobus monkeys in Jozani forest and a shoreline that changes colour with every tide, and the island earns its near-mythical reputation honestly.

What Zanzibar feels like

The pace is set by the tide and the call to prayer. Stone Town hums in the early morning (schoolchildren weaving past coffee vendors, carpenters restoring carved doors) then slows through the midday heat. On the east coast, kitesurfers skim past seaweed farmers working the shallows, and evenings mean grilled seafood eaten by lamplight. It is unhurried without being sleepy, and deeply hospitable.

What not to miss

Around the island

Spice-route flavours

Zanzibari cooking is the spice trade on a plate: Swahili coconut curries sharpened with tamarind, Indian breads, and seafood straight off the dhows. In Stone Town, the evening gathering at Forodhani Gardens turns the seafront into an open-air grill. Urojo, a tangy turmeric soup crowded with bhajias and crisps, is the definitive street lunch.

Moving between coasts

Zanzibar has no railway and no transit card. Locals ride dala dalas, converted minibuses with bench seating that follow fixed routes between towns; visitors mostly use taxis and pre-arranged transfers, agreeing the fare before departure. Boats shuttle from Stone Town's harbour to Changuu Island, and driving is on the left if you arrange a temporary local licence through a hire company. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport lies about fifteen minutes' drive south of Stone Town. Taxis wait outside arrivals; agree the fare before you set off, as meters are not used.

Frequently asked questions

Which airports serve Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is served via ZNZ.

Is Zanzibar good for a weekend trip?

Yes, Zanzibar works for a weekend as well as a longer stay.

What kind of trip is Zanzibar best for?

Zanzibar is best for beach and nature trips.

Which destinations pair well with Zanzibar?

Within multi-city range: Dar es Salaam (73 km), Mombasa (247 km), Nairobi (602 km).

Can you pay by card in Zanzibar?

Only patchily. Larger hotels and tour operators take cards, but markets, dala dalas and most small restaurants are cash-only. Carry Tanzanian shillings in small notes, and note that cash machines cluster in Stone Town rather than in the beach villages.

When is the sea best for swimming?

The Indian Ocean stays warm all year. The north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa swims well at most states of the tide, while east-coast beaches empty dramatically at low water. The long rains of April and May bring the least reliable conditions.

Is Stone Town easy to explore on foot?

Yes. Its alleys are too narrow for cars, so walking is the only way. Getting briefly lost is part of the experience; the sea or a bazaar is never more than ten minutes away, and locals readily point the way.
