Tenerife holidays

Tenerife written in the sand as waves roll in

Snow can dust the summit of Mount Teide while swimmers float in the Atlantic 3,700 metres below. Tenerife compresses several climates into one island: an hour's drive separates the laurel cloud-forest of Anaga from banana terraces above Puerto de la Cruz and the sun-baked beaches of Costa Adeje.

Tenerife is made for unwinding. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Tenerife trips.

Why visit Tenerife

Teide is the headline (Spain's highest mountain rising from a lunar caldera, with some of Europe's clearest night skies) but Tenerife rewards those who explore both of its faces. The green north keeps the island's Canarian heart: the UNESCO-listed streets of La Laguna, harbour pools in Garachico, family-run guachinches pouring wine from the hillside above. The south delivers dependable sunshine, black- and golden-sand beaches, and boats heading out to resident pilot whales in the strait. Each February, Santa Cruz throws one of the world's biggest carnivals.

What Tenerife feels like

The island runs at two speeds. Southern resorts are engineered for ease (promenades, beach clubs, year-round warmth) while northern towns keep Canarian rhythms: plaza life in La Laguna, fishermen's bars in Punta del Hidalgo, mist drifting over the Anaga ridges by mid-afternoon. Between the two rises the caldera, silent and vast, where the evening light turns the rock copper.

Guachinches and Canarian classics

The north's guachinches (informal, seasonal eateries set up in garages and vine sheds) serve whatever the family cooks alongside their own country wine, and they are the island's best introduction to Canarian food. Expect wrinkled papas arrugadas dragged through red and green mojo, rabbit in salmorejo marinade, and grilled vieja from the day boats. Finish with a layered barraquito coffee.

Buses, trams and hairpins

TITSA's green buses cover the whole island, from resort promenades to mountain villages, with fares loaded on the rechargeable ten+ (tenmás) travel card. The Tranvía de Tenerife tram links Santa Cruz with La Laguna. For Teide, Anaga and the Masca road, a hire car gives the freedom the timetables cannot. Just respect the hairpins. Tenerife has two airports: Tenerife South (Reina Sofía) near the main resorts and Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) beside La Laguna. Check which one your flight uses: they are more than an hour apart by road.

Frequently asked questions

Which airports serve Tenerife?

Tenerife is served via TFS.

Is Tenerife good for a weekend trip?

Yes, Tenerife works for a weekend as well as a longer stay.

What kind of trip is Tenerife best for?

Tenerife is best for beach trips, popular for unwinding.

Which destinations pair well with Tenerife?

Within multi-city range: Gran Canaria (117 km), Lanzarote (307 km), Agadir (730 km).

How different are the north and south of Tenerife?

Substantially. The south is drier, sunnier and built around beach holidays; the north is greener, cloudier and more traditionally Canarian, with historic towns and terraced farmland. The island is small enough to sample both: the motorway ring makes the crossing in about an hour.

Can you reach the summit of Mount Teide?

Yes, but the final trail above the cable car station needs a timed permit booked long in advance. Without one you can still ride to 3,555 metres and walk the viewpoints there, or take a guided sunrise ascent with an overnight refuge stay.

Is the sea warm enough to swim all year?

It hovers between about 19°C in late winter and 24°C in early autumn, so swimming is realistic in every month. Natural lava pools at Garachico and Bajamar offer sheltered dips when the Atlantic swell picks up.
