Gold Coast holidays

Aerial of the Gold Coast surf beach and the Surfers Paradise skyline

The Gold Coast is a long, golden run of surf beaches along Australia's subtropical east coast, its skyline of towers rising straight from the sand at Surfers Paradise. Fifty-odd kilometres of coastline unfurl from the calm broadwater in the north to the famous point breaks at the New South Wales border, backed inland by a green wall of rainforest ranges. Sun-drenched, brash and built for a holiday, this is Australia's playground of surf, theme parks and easy beach days.

Gold Coast is made for unwinding. It's ready to explore in the Nuvoha app: set your budget and see complete Gold Coast trips.

Why visit Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is built for a beach holiday and does it wholeheartedly. The surf runs the length of the coast, from the beginner-friendly sand at Surfers Paradise to the world-class point break where Snapper Rocks meets Coolangatta, with patrolled beaches and warm water most of the year. Big-name theme parks and the SkyPoint observation deck supply the thrills, while the headland walk at Burleigh and the dining strip at Broadbeach show a more laid-back side. Behind the coast, the hinterland ranges hide rainforest walks, waterfalls and glow-worm caves, all within a short drive. It is unashamed fun, with nature never far away.

What Gold Coast feels like

Life on the Gold Coast is lived in board shorts and bare feet, turned firmly towards the surf. Mornings begin with a swim or a dawn paddle, days drift between the beach and the pool, and the strip hums into the night with restaurants, bars and neon at Surfers Paradise. It can feel unapologetically flashy, all high-rises and holiday buzz, yet a short stroll to Burleigh or the southern points finds a mellower, surf-town mood among the pandanus trees. The sun shines for much of the year, the sea stays warm and inviting, and the whole coast runs at the relaxed pace of a permanent holiday.

Coast and sights to plan around

Along the coast

The Gold Coast table

Eating on the Gold Coast is casual and coastal, revolving around fresh seafood, sun and the outdoors. Beachfront surf clubs serve fish and chips with a sea view, Broadbeach lays on a broad spread of restaurants from Japanese to Italian, and the brunch and coffee culture is as strong here as anywhere in Queensland. Local prawns, mud crab and reef fish headline the seafood, tropical fruit fills the markets, and a wave of craft breweries and hinterland producers has added depth to what was once a purely holiday menu.

Getting up and down the coast

The G:link light rail runs the length of the built-up coast, linking Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Southport and Main Beach, and connects at Helensvale to the train line north to Brisbane. Buses fill in the rest, all paid with a Go card, and the beachfront is easy and flat to walk or cycle. A car helps for the theme parks and, above all, for the winding roads up into the hinterland ranges. Gold Coast Airport sits at Coolangatta, at the southern end of the coast on the border with New South Wales. Buses link it to the light rail and the beaches, while many visitors also arrive through Brisbane Airport, around an hour and a half to the north.
