Five squat windmills stand in line on the rise above Mykonos Town, sails stripped to skeletons, whitewash glaring against the blue. Below them, the painted wooden balconies of Little Venice hang over the water, and out past the harbour the sacred island of Delos lies low on the horizon: the reason the ancient Greeks came here long before the beach clubs did.

Why visit Mykonos
Mykonos runs on contrast. The island built its name on beach clubs, cocktail bars and summer nightlife along the south coast, yet Chora remains one of the best-preserved Cycladic towns in Greece: a maze of white cube houses, red-domed chapels and paved lanes originally designed to confuse pirates. Ten minutes offshore, uninhabited Delos holds one of the country's most important archaeological sites. Come for either half; the island is small enough to give you both in a single day.
What Mykonos feels like
July and August are loud, glamorous and crowded, with superyachts moored off Psarou and queues for sunset tables in Little Venice. Outside the peak weeks the island relaxes: fishermen mend nets at the old port, Ano Mera drowses around its monastery square, and the northern coves of Agios Sostis and Fokos stay windblown and mostly empty. The meltemi wind is a character in its own right, rearranging beach plans without notice.
Landmarks and beaches worth your time
- Kato Mili windmills: Sixteenth-century grain windmills on the ridge above Chora, once powered by the same north wind that still batters the island.
- Little Venice (Alefkandra): A row of former captains' houses whose painted timber balconies overhang the sea on the western edge of Mykonos Town.
- Delos: A short boat ride from the old port, the entire island is a protected archaeological site: sanctuary of Apollo, mosaic-floored villas and the marble lion terrace.
- Panagia Paraportiani: An irregular whitewashed church near the harbour, actually five small chapels fused together over centuries.
- Ano Mera and Panagia Tourliani: The island's inland village, gathered around a sixteenth-century monastery with a carved marble bell tower.
- The northern coves: Agios Sostis and Fokos face the open Aegean without sunbeds or bars, a quieter alternative to the organised south-coast strip.
Corners of the island
- Chora (Mykonos Town): The island's capital and harbour, a deliberately labyrinthine Cycladic town of chapels, shops and bougainvillea-draped lanes.
- Ano Mera: The only sizeable inland settlement, with a broad monastery square, tavernas favoured by locals and a working agricultural feel.
- The south-coast beach strip: From Ornos round to Elia, a chain of sandy bays (Platis Gialos, Paraga, Paradise) linked by boat in summer and known for organised beach clubs.
- The north coast: Exposed to the meltemi, with the bays of Panormos and Agios Sostis and a barer, rockier landscape than the sheltered south.
The Mykonian table
Mykonian cooking is saltier and sharper than the island's glossy image suggests. Kopanisti, a peppery fermented cheese, is the local signature, spread on rusks or folded into dips. Louza (air-dried, spice-cured pork loin) turns up on meze plates, and almond sweets called amygdalota close a meal. Fish tavernas around Ano Mera and the old port grill the day's catch simply, with lemon and little else.

- Louza (spice-cured pork loin)
- Mostra (rusk with kopanisti and tomato)
- Grilled octopus
- Amygdalota (almond sweets)
Getting from cove to cove
KTEL buses leave from two stations on the edge of Chora: Fabrika serves the southern beaches, while the old port station covers Ano Mera and the north. In summer, caiques shuttle along the south-coast bays and a SeaBus links the old and new ports. Chora itself is strictly pedestrian, with car parks at its edges. Scooters and quads are popular, but the roads are narrow, unlit in places and gusty. Mykonos Airport lies barely three kilometres from Chora, roughly a ten-minute transfer. The terminal is compact and stretched to capacity on summer weekends, so arrive with time in hand.
Practical pointers
- Tipping is relaxed: rounding up or leaving a small note for table service is appreciated, never demanded.
- Beachwear stays on the beach: cover up in Chora's lanes and especially at churches and the Tourliani monastery.
- Many small chapels are kept by local families; if a door is open, look in quietly and leave everything as found.
- Prices in shops are as marked: bargaining is not the custom on the island.
- Delos boats run in the morning from the old port, and the site has almost no shade: take water and a hat.
- When the meltemi is up, head for sheltered southern beaches like Ornos or Psarou rather than the exposed north.
- Little Venice fills an hour before sunset; the windmill ridge just above offers the same light with more room.
- Chora's lanes were laid out to disorient: use the sea and the windmills as compass points when the map app gives up.
- In May or late September most beach clubs wind down, but the town, the tavernas and the Delos boats keep going.

Is Mykonos only about nightlife?
No. Chora's old town, the Delos ruins, the monastery village of Ano Mera and the wind-scoured northern coves make up a completely different island. The party scene concentrates on a handful of south-coast beaches and is easy to avoid, or to find.
How do I visit Delos?
Licensed boats leave the old port most mornings, sailing about thirty minutes each way; the site then takes two to three hours on foot. Delos is uninhabited and visits are daytime only, so check return times before you land.
When is the sea warm enough to swim?
Roughly June to October, with the warmest water in late summer. April and May usually feel too cool for most swimmers, and the meltemi can make even an August afternoon choppy on north-facing beaches.
